A starting point for practice
Use the words you actually said and the full recording length. Pace describes speed, not speaking quality.
How to use this tool
Words per minute averages speech and silence across an entire recording. Two people can have the same WPM and sound very different. Listen for pauses between ideas, clear emphasis, and whether your listener has time to follow. Repeat the same answer with one deliberate change.
How is speaking speed calculated?
The calculator counts the words in your transcript, divides by the full recording length in seconds, and multiplies by 60. For example, 135 words in 54 seconds is 150 WPM. Contractions and hyphenated words count as one word; punctuation alone does not count.
Should I include pauses?
Yes. Include pauses in the recording length to measure overall speaking pace. Removing silence measures a different thing: how fast the words come out while you are actively speaking.
Can this listen to me or transcribe my recording?
No. This tool uses only the transcript and duration you enter. It does not request microphone access, upload your text, or generate an AI speaking assessment.
Is there an ideal words-per-minute score?
There is no single target for every situation. Your material, audience, pauses, and emphasis all matter. Compare similar attempts and how easy they are to follow, rather than treating a pace as a quality score.
