A free download tells you very little about how much speaking practice you can do. One app gives ongoing basic feedback, another stops after a few sessions, and a browser recorder leaves the review to you. Choose the kind of help first, then check its limits.
This guide compares five options with a documented free use case. If you want an exercise routine rather than a product comparison, start with our free articulation training guide.
Articulated publishes this comparison and includes its own tools. We reviewed official descriptions on October 11, 2026; we did not complete a new signed-in test of every free plan. Availability and onboarding can vary by account, device, and country.
What you can use without paying
| Option | Free use case | Main limit | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Articulated browser tools | Record two attempts, check a transcript, plan an answer, calculate pace | Self-review; no automatic voice analysis or AI score | A repeatable practice routine without an account |
| Speeko | Sessions with basic AI feedback and selected learning content | Fuller feedback and learning access depend on the plan | Trying ongoing basic speech feedback |
| Vocal Image | Daily practice set, including roleplay in its published free offer | Choosing from the full scenario library requires a subscription | Trying a daily guided activity |
| Yoodli Starter | Five sessions across the lifetime of the free plan | The five-session allowance does not renew monthly | Trying interactive conversation practice |
| Orai free tools | Browser recording, timers, planning and rehearsal tools | Separate from Orai's paid AI coaching | Preparing and recording a specific talk |
The table separates ongoing tools, a daily selection, and a fixed session allowance. None should be treated as a promise of unlimited premium coaching.
1. Articulated browser tools: best for a free practice routine
Our free speaking tools cover three jobs: prepare an answer, say it out loud, and review what happened. You can organize your own notes, use a timed prompt, or record two attempts in Record & Compare.
For a simple session, record a one-minute project update. Listen, choose one change, and make a second attempt. The recorder lets you compare the clips; it does not transcribe, grade, or interpret your voice. Download any recordings you want to keep before leaving because it does not keep a recording history.
The filler and repetition checker works from pasted text. It can flag possible patterns in a transcript, but it cannot hear missing hesitations or decide whether every occurrence of “like” is unnecessary. The speaking-speed calculator uses a transcript and duration rather than listening to your audio.
Choose this when: you can review your own answer and want a small, repeatable task. Consider another option when: you need automatic feedback on the recording itself. Articulated's premium mobile drills provide AI feedback, but those drills require a subscription and are not the free service described here.
2. Speeko: best for trying basic AI feedback regularly
Speeko's help center describes a free tier with unlimited sessions and basic AI feedback. It also lists the first module of each course, AI roleplay, free live events, and one daily warm-up activity. The documentation covers iOS, macOS, Android, and web.
That makes it a candidate if self-review leaves you unsure what to change. Start with one speaking task you can repeat, and inspect whether the basic feedback points to a specific part of your response.
Check before committing: which feedback and activities remain accessible in your account without a paid trial. A free-tier help page and an upgrade screen answer different questions; make sure you understand the route to the access you intend to use. We have verified the published offer, not every account's onboarding flow.
For its broader features, see our Articulated and Speeko comparison.
3. Vocal Image: best for a daily guided selection
Vocal Image's own guide describes a free daily practice set that includes roleplay. It distinguishes that from selecting any scenario in the full library, which requires a subscription.
The question is whether you want a daily activity or control over a specific conversation. A daily selection may suit a general routine. If you need to rehearse tomorrow's salary conversation repeatedly, check whether that exact scenario is available before planning your session around it.
Choose this when: you want to try guided voice and conversation work. Watch the boundary: daily access is not the same as unrestricted access to every exercise. Check the language and current offer in your version of the product.
4. Yoodli Starter: best for a small conversation-practice trial
Yoodli's pricing page lists five lifetime sessions for Starter. This is a fixed allowance, not five fresh sessions every month. The same page explains that a practice session over 30 seconds counts as a roleplay.
Use the allowance deliberately. Prepare one situation, try it, review the feedback, and use a later session to test a change. For example, rehearse a response to an interview question and then work on an unexpected follow-up.
Choose this when: you want to experience an AI interlocutor before deciding on a paid routine. Choose something else for: an ongoing free schedule after the allowance is used. Review the plan's data terms before sharing a personal or work example; you can practice with invented names and non-confidential details.
5. Orai free tools: best for preparing a particular talk
Orai's tool library offers browser tools without signup, including audio and video recording, a teleprompter, speech timing, and an interview-answer timer. The library is separate from the subscription coaching app.
These tools fit a prepared piece of speaking: a short presentation, a toast, or an answer with a time limit. A teleprompter can help with delivery practice; an unscripted question is a different test. Choose the tool that matches the actual task.
Choose this when: you have a talk to prepare and can assess the recording yourself. Check the distinction: free recording and planning tools do not establish that unlimited Orai AI feedback is free.
How to compare free access over a week
Keep a short record after each session. This is a practical checklist, not an effectiveness test:
| Record this | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| What task did I complete without paying? | Shows usable access rather than the number of advertised features |
| Did I get feedback, or did I review myself? | Makes the type of help explicit |
| What will I change in the next attempt? | Shows whether the session produced a useful next step |
| Is there a daily or lifetime limit? | Helps you plan a routine you can repeat |
| Did I activate a subscription or trial? | Separates free access from a future charge |
Use the same prompt at the beginning and end of the week. Compare the clarity of your message, not just an app's score. A score that changes without a noticeable difference in the recording is less useful than a specific improvement you can hear.
When paying may add something useful
Consider a paid option when you need feedback you cannot produce yourself, more sessions than the free allowance, or a specific kind of practice. Our speech coaching app comparison covers broader options; the interview-practice comparison focuses on preparation for spoken answers.
Before subscribing, finish one complete practice loop: speak, review, choose a change, and repeat. The purchase should support that loop. A longer feature list alone is not a reason to pay.
FAQ
What is the best free speech practice app?
Choose by the help you need. Articulated's browser tools support recording and self-review without AI scoring. Speeko documents ongoing basic AI feedback. Vocal Image offers a free daily set, Yoodli has five lifetime Starter sessions, and Orai provides free browser tools separate from its paid coaching.
Is Articulated free for speaking practice?
The website tools are free, including Record & Compare and the speaking-speed calculator. The mobile app is free to download, but premium recorded drills with AI feedback require a subscription. The browser tools do not provide that premium AI analysis.
Does Yoodli's free allowance reset every month?
No. Its pricing page lists five lifetime Starter sessions. Check the current offer before relying on it for a regular schedule.
Sources and review method
We checked the official free-access descriptions linked in each entry on October 11, 2026, and matched them to the type of practice available. Recommendations are editorial judgments about published access, not independent outcome rankings or claims that all accounts see the same offer. Our editorial standards explain sourcing and corrections.
